School Sports

hat is the School Games?

The School Games consists of four unique types of competition:

• Intra-School Competition
• Local Inter-School Competition
• County Final
• School Games National Finals

The School Games, which is funded by Sport England National Lottery funding and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, is a government led programme designed to deliver competitive school sport to all young people.

A network of School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Local Organising Committees (LOCs) have worked alongside the Youth Sport Trust in delivering three distinct levels of competition since the Games' inception in 2010 - ranging from intra - inter school activity, in addition to the National Finals, which is supported by National Governing Bodies.

SGOs are funded by the Department of Health and Social Care and the National Lottery through Sport England to deliver the School Games programme for three days a week. They are predominantly hosted by schools to whom the funding is paid. Outside of this, many SGOs also work as teachers, within School Sport Partnerships or in other roles in sport and schools. This network currently services in excess of 17,500 registered schools who compete across School Games' competitions.

The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The Games are made up of three levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, and at a county/area level.

In order to promote competitive sport as part of the new National Curriculum, Langwathby will be holding a range of intra-school (Level 1) School Games events throughout the year as well as taking part in inter-school sporting competitions arranged by Eden Valley Sports Partnership. Details and results of all sporting competitions will be displayed on our Sports Calendar and Results page, as well as in school on our School Games noticeboard.

Sports Ambassadors

Langwathby  Primary School’s Sports Ambassadors are a group of children from Year 6 who play a very important role in PE at the school.

Appointed in September for the whole academic year, Sports Ambassadors are responsible for:

• promoting sporting events at Langwathby;
• encouraging other children to take part in physical activity.

Sports Ambassadors have to apply for their positions and must be able to demonstrate a commitment to PE and sport, as well as the School Games values of honesty, teamwork, self-belief, respect, passion and determination.

Sports Organising Committee

This is a group of five Year 6 children who were elected by their classmates.  The Sports Organising Committee are responsible for:

• helping staff with School Games events (for example, setting up equipment, score-keeping and officiating);
• contributing ideas for whole-school sport events;
• helping staff to create and update the PE noticeboard and displays.
