Reading

We use a variety of approaches to support the teaching of reading across the school.

Our Reading Spines are directly linked to Topic Learning and signpost high-quality Texts for all classes. Class novels are used to inspire and engage, alongside regular author outreach. We ensure pupils are able to access high quality, language rich, texts and are introduced to new and excited authors.

Our classrooms have their own class libraries,  and our Key Stage 2 librarians run our whole school library- working with all pupils to inspire a love of reading. The School's Library Service visits termly for pupils to exchange books and engage in book talk. Themed topic boxes and regular reading challenges are used to enhance reading for information and reading for pleasure.

Guided Reading sessions take place across the school in both 'carousel' and 'whole-class' form. Children in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2 are heard one to one as often as possible.

One of the highlights of our annual calendar is our World Book Day, which often features local authors and storytellers.

Langwathby is a genuine Reader Community, authentic Book Talk is everywhere!
